Sheffield Wednesday 3-2

Words: Holly Evans

Sheffield Wednesday came back from behind to give their survival hopes a much needed win in a game that was branded a “six-pointer” against fellow strugglers Blackburn Rovers at Hillsborough.

It was a bright start for Wednesday who were piling pressure onto their rivals and they had the best of the early chances at the start of a thrilling match.

Despite this, it was Blackburn that took the lead when Owls keeper Chris Kirkland brought down David Dunn in the area and the way side were awarded a penalty that was neatly converted by Jordan Rhodes.

However, Wednesday were still the stronger side and it wasn’t long before they equalised through a terrific solo effort from Jermaine Johnson.

Ten minutes before the end of an eventful first half, the home side were in front when Sheffield Wednesday were awarded a penalty following an unfair challenge on Reda Johnson by Josh Morris; the spot-kick was neatly converted by Leroy Lita.

The Owls should have gone into half time with a third when Lita nearly slotted the ball in but they needn’t be too disappointed with their display so far, which gave their opponents a lot to think about going into half time.

It was a more subdued start to the second half from both teams but Blackburn were starting to discover gaps in the Wednesday defence and created some dangerous play, which paid off with twenty minutes to go when Scott Dann headed the ball in from close range to equalise for Rovers.

Going into the final stages of the match, the urgency from both teams to go and get the win was obvious but it was Wednesday that were starting to look more likely to get the winner and they did through an absolutely sublime goal from Jermaine Johnson, who fired the ball in from twenty five yards to make sure that The Owls are one-step closer to safety.

Speaking after the match, Wednesday manager Dave Jones said: “It doesn’t matter if you’re top, middle of the road or bottom, all victories are important to you…It shows how hard we are working to try and stay in this division.”

It was a much needed win that puts Sheffield Wednesday in eighteenth position, three points clear of the relegation zone as they go into three-straight away games against tough opposition, starting with Millwall on Tuesday.
