Uni of Sheffield steal the day at Sports Park

The University of Sheffield came away from Sports Park Varsity with 10 points out of the 13 on offer to claim the day and expand on their one point lead to 16 – 7.5 in their favour.

Before the day started, Hallam already encountered some troubles with their footballers being punished for misbehaviour by their first team in Saturday’s win at Hillsborough. This means that in the 2s, 3s and 4s matches, Hallam were not to be awarded a point should they win. If they drew then only Uni of Sheffield would be awarded the half a point and should Uni of Sheffield win then they would be awarded the full point.

This meant that Hallam needed to win these matches in order to stop University of Sheffield from claiming a point advantage.

The seconds finished with a 1-1 draw, meaning that Uni of Sheffield got the half a point. The thirds lost their match 1-2, meaning that University of Sheffield got the whole point and the fourths lost their match 0-2 meaning that University of Sheffield once again took the whole point.

There were, however, better results for the women’s football team as they produced a fantastic display in the second half to beat their closest rivals 4-1.

For Hallam’s cricketers, it was a tale of two genders. It was heartbreak for the men as poor bowling meant that they lost their firsts and seconds match but for the women it was elation as they thrashed their opposition.

It wasn’t the best of days from Hallam’s rugby union teams as the thirds drew 5-5 after missing a last minute conversion to claim the win, meaning that University of Sheffield managed to scrape half a point. The second team lost 44-19 with the firsts putting a fantastic display in the first half to only let themselves down in the second and lose 34-20.

Hallam’s archery team lost a close competition with University of Sheffield 18-16.

For Hallam’s rugby league team, however, it was a different story. They won an absolute thriller of a game 30-26, despite being 0-16 at one point; this easily managed to claim game of the day at Sports Park.

Overall Varsity score: University of Sheffield 16 – 7.5 Sheffield Hallam
