Sheffield Hallam’s men’s volleyball 1′s travel to Camerino in Italy later this month hoping to be crowned champions of Europe. The European Universities Sport Association (EUSA) take place from the 19th to 26th July and Hallam are one of fourteen teams competing. Universities from Armenia, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Turkey are all present whilst Hallam are the sole representatives of the United Kingdom.

The competition was last held in 2013 when the Technical University of Munich took the title. Hallam competed that year but since then have been crowned champions of BUCS twice, in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015. They beat Northumbria 3-2 in 2014 to take the crown for the first time and last year, they defeated Bournemouth 3-1 to keep their title for another year.

Despite this success, captain Alex Jenkins was quick to cool any talk of Hallam taking the European crown. He told SHUlife Sport: “We are just looking to compete and play well as a team, we are missing a few crucial players so some of the younger guys will be relied on more heavily. This will be a great learning opportunity for everyone! Hopefully we can perform well and get some results”.

One man who has been crucial in the recent volleyball success at Hallam is their coach, Keith Trenam. His influence has been so great that the players have created their own hashtag for him, with #VivaLaTrenam regularly accompanying their tweets. Keith told us that the competition could provide a great platform for the players saying, “This is a great opportunity for the players to play against high level teams and help them to progress their game and showcase themselves for future pro contracts.”

Hallam’s squad for the tournament is as follows: Alex Jenkins, Owen Lamb, Leon Davis Chambers, Jordan Darylimple, Jonny Willis, Sonny Chaney, Alex Calpin and Jack Nurdin.

The draw for the competition will be made once the teams arrive in Italy.

We at SHUlife Sport are delighted to be accompanying Hallam and will be reporting on their every step so make sure you stay tuned to our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, as well as our Snapchat, for all the very latest.

The full list of teams competing:

Two Hallam students will travel to Gwangju, South Korea in early July to represent Team Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the 2015 World University Games.
The games consists of 21 sports and around 12,00 students are expected to compete. Two of those students are Hallam’s Max Litchfield, a swimmer, and Claire Cryan, diving, who were both selected to compete in their respective fields. Athletes were selected on a range of criteria as well as qualifying times and results. They are also ratified by the National Governing Body of their respective sports before their selections are confirmed.
It will be a fantastic platform for Max and Claire to perform as the games are widely recognised as as the world’s second largest, competitive multi-sport event behind only the Olympics. It could also be seen as huge launch pad for their careers with the likes of Beth Tweddle and Jessica Ennis-Hill both previously competing in the World University Games.
The games is a bi-annual event and in 2013, Great Britain secured 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals. Sheffield also has some history with the games as in 1991 it hosted the event. This left a lasting legacy in the city with venues such as Ponds Forge which are now used by Team Sheffield Hallam for their training as well as competitive BUCS and Varsity fixtures.
Helen Roberts, Performance Athlete Support Officer here at Hallam, said :

“Hallam are extremely proud that two of our student athletes have been selected to compete at the World University Games. Max and Claire have both worked extremely hard over their years at Hallam, managing their academics and sport and putting 110% in at all times. We would like to wish them all the best in the completion and hope they have a fabulous time representing Great Britain”

The games take place from the 3rd to 14th July. Make sure you stay tuned to us to find out how Max and Claire get on!

Hallam’s women’s rugby union side enjoyed a memorable season after completing a league and cup double as well as going the whole season unbeaten.
Their league campaign began with a 45-0 win over Leeds Trinity and that was followed by a 118-0 win over Newcastle which saw them through to the next stage of the cup. A 107-0 win against Newcastle was to follow the week after and these results set the tone for the rest of the season as Hallam went on to dominate.
Wins over Durham, Hull, Sunderland and York St. John followed in the league whilst they reached the Northern Conference Cup final after defeating Sunderland, Lancaster and Durham.
The Northern Conference Cup was sealed in March when they defeated Edge Hill 24-18 in a close and hard-fought game. Edgehill play in the same tier as Hallam and had won the Northern 2A division which meant the game always looked being a tight affair. However, after coming back from 7-8 down, Hallam found themselves 19-8 up. Edge Hill fought back to 19-18 however and the momentum seemed to be in their favour. Thankfully, one last try from Hallam late on killed Edge Hill’s chances of securing victory and won the cup for Hallam.
The league was then sealed without Hallam having to play their remaining two games as Teesside conceded the re-scheduled game which had previously been postponed. Hallam finished three points above Durham and they even had one game in hand, though that fixture will not be played. Hallam’s goal difference of +314 was also 104 better off than Durham’s which is another testament to just how well the team did last season.
It was a great year for the side who bounced back from last year’s relegation from the Northern 1A division by earning promotion back at the first time of asking.
Hallam were a class above all season and proved to be just too good for their opposition. Captain Bronagh Doherty by example with her very impressive try scoring but the team’s success was down to every single player from defence to attack, lead by coach Ryan Amos.

Hallam’s women’s water polo team secured the BUCS Championship this season in dramatic circumstances to win the title for the second year in a row.
Hallam finished second in the Premier North division, winning seven of their nine games but losing twice to eventual title winners, Edinburgh.
This was still enough for the team to progress to the semi-final group stage where they were dominant, defeating Cardiff 16-6, Bristol 12-3 and then Imperial College 19-5 to progress to the BUCS Finals.
Hallam were joined in the final by Newcastle, Bristol and Edinburgh, and would have to top the mini-group in order to retain their title.
Last year Hallam stormed to the title, winning all three games, but it was not to be as easy this time around, as Hallam lost the opening game 11-7 to Newcastle. With the pressure on, they then bounced back to defeat Bristol 7-4 which meant they still had a chance to win the title, when they took on Edinburgh in the final game.
Edinburgh had beaten Bristol and Newcastle already, to keep up their 100% record this season and make them favourites for the title. To complicate things further, Hallam needed to not only defeat Edinburgh, but win by 6 goals to retain their crown.
Thankfully Hallam did just that, winning 9-3 to revenge their earlier defeats to Edinburgh but to, more importantly, seal the BUCS Championship once more!
To add the icing and cherry on top of the cake, Hallam then secured an emphatic Varsity victory before going on to be crowned Team of the Year at the annual SHU Sports Ball!

Men’s volleyball have enjoyed a brilliant season after the first team won the BUCS Championship for the second year running, whilst the second team won the league and cup double.
The men’s 1’s finished second in the Premier North division and then progressed to the Final 8’s Group stage where they defeated Bournemouth, Durham and Exeter to finish top of the group. They were then drawn against University of East London in the semi finals, and they won by two sets to one, meaning they moved on to the final at BUCS Big Wednesday.
In the final, the team did brilliantly to defeat Bournemouth once again, this time by three sets to one. Hallam took the first set 25-23 before Bournemouth equalised by taking the second set. Hallam responded by winning the third and his meant that they were one set away from retaining their title. After a battling performance, Hallam won the final set 25-22 to secure the 3-1 victory and spark jubilant celebrations.
Only a week earlier, the men’s volleyball 2’s had completed the double after winning the Northern Conference Cup. They defeated Manchester Metropolitan 3-0 in the final, winning the three sets 25-23, 25-19 and 25-20 respectively.
This was after they had secured the Northern 3B title. In their ten games, Hallam only lost one and were victorious in the other nine and it was this sort of form which saw them finish 6 points ahead of their nearest rivals and also guided them to double success.
Once again Hallam’s Volleyball coach Keith Trenam, earned plaudits for the great work he’s done with the teams. He’s certainly played a big part in the recent success of volleyball at Hallam, so much so that he now has his own hashtag, #VivaLaTrenam. However, the players also deserve a lot of credit as it has been their brilliant performances this year that has led to this success.
The men’s volleyball 1’s will now look to add to this success when they travel to the European University Volleyball Championships in Italy in late July.

Hallam won a total of 33 points across the whole of Varsity week and that was thanks to many brilliant performances by the whole of Team Sheffield Hallam. However, we thought we’d take a closer look at 5 performances in particular that really stood out to us.

1) Netball 3’s
Hallam went into Monday at the English Institute of Sport knowing that they needed a big day to cut University of Sheffield’s lead which then stood at 6 points. Thankfully, they got just that as they managed to halve the deficit by the close of play.
A defining moment on that day came in the Netball 3’s game. With around ten minutes to play, University of Sheffield lead 25-20 and seemed to be well in control of the game and moving towards the win. However, Hallam dug deep and pulled off the most dramatic of comebacks, scoring four times in quick succession with only seconds left on the clock to secure a 30-28 win.

2) Cricket
Varsity week began with athletics and climbing, as well as a plethora of action at the Sheffield Hallam Sports Park. After a string of great performances, Hallam won the day 9-6 overall to set them up well for the rest of the week.
One of the key factors behind Hallam’s good opening day was the whitewash in the cricket, with Hallam winning all three games.
Up first was the men’s 2’s. Hallam managed to bowl their opponents out for 70, meaning Hallam needed 71 to win and they reached that target with ease, reaching 71/2 inside 7 overs.
Next up was the women’s game. University of Sheffield ended on 104, setting Hallam an impressive target of 105. It seemed a big ask but despite Hallam needing 11 off their final over, they managed to reach 105 off their final ball! It was controversial last over with University of Sheffield deemed to have bowled a no-ball, allowing Hallam to reach their target.
The final game was the men’s cricket 1’s. Hallam were put into bat first and set their opponents a target of 106. This target proved to be too much for University of Sheffield who only reached 93 inside their 10 overs meaning Hallam took the win and secured the clean-sweep.

3) Cycling
For the first time in their history, Hallam Cycling were victorious at Varsity after winning 3 of the 5 events to secure 1.5 points out of the 2 on offer.
The first event was the Cross Country event which took place in March. Hallam were successful in that which put the 1-0 up in the cycling Varsity.
Next up was the Downhill event which took place on the 12th April. Hallam once again secured the win which put the 2-0 up and put them in a good position going into the next three events.
University of Sheffield responded by winning the Road Time Trial event before Hallam secured the 1.5 points by winning the BMX Event. This secured Hallam’s first ever win in the Cycling Varsity and the points won played a big part in Hallam’s attempted overall Varsity comeback.

4) Men’s Water Polo
The men’s water polo team ended a brilliant season by securing their first Varsity triumph in eight years.
The team have already won the BUCS Northern 1A division, winning every game before going on to lift the BUCS Trophy. It was then onto the Premier North Play-Offs and they actually played their second play-off game on the morning of Varsity, beating St Andrews 18-3 to secure promotion.
After already playing a game that morning, it made it even more special that Hallam went on to win Varsity 30-9. It was a comprehensive win and a very impressive performance with Hallam always looking the superior team.

5) American Football/Women’s basketball 1’s
Ok, this is cheating slightly but we just couldn’t separate these two performances.
Both these teams were expected to win, going off the form book, but they both secured emphatic victories to help Hallam’s cause.
The American Football was the final event of Varsity day 1. The Hallam Warriors came into Varsity on the back of an unbeaten season which had saw them win the BUCS Yorkshire Division. They kept up this for in Varsity, running out 42-6 winners over the Sheffield Sabres to end the day on a high for Hallam.
The women’s basketball 1’s played their game on the Monday at the English Institute of Sport. It was an unbelievable performance as they ran out 116-12 winners to secure the win and Varsity point in emphatic style.

On Saturday morning, it was an early start for the teams but fuelled up by a McDonalds breakfast, B team were up first playing Nottingham Trent. This was a great match to watch as Hallam dominated from the beginning and kept possession throughout the game managing to score six goals, attempting to shoot at every opportunity they got. It was a victory for Hallam at 6-0.

The ladies team were up next facing Warwick who were one of the stronger teams in the contest. Warwick started their attack early managing to score a goal within the first minute of the game however Hallam saved their next couple attempts. Unfortunately this didn’t weaken Warwick and they score again. Hallam don’t lose courage and gain possession but a fierce Warwick intercept. Hallam fight for the ball but Warwick get it although Hallam manage to save their goal attempts before half time. The second half is exciting as Hallam make good progress and bin a Warwick player however Warwick end up scoring meaning Hallam accept a 0-7 loss.

Hallam’s B team face Southampton next in a very competitive game. Hallam make early attempts to score but Southampton manage to save them. Hallam regain possession by binning Southampton and manage to score. After a squabble for the ball, Southampton shoot too high and Hallam attempt another goal. The pace picks up after half time with neither team wasting opportunities to score and Hallam’s attack gets stronger. The game is another Victory for Hallam at 2-1.

The Hallam ladies had one victory against Stirling winning 3-0 but their strongest performance was in their final match against Birmingham with some good attempts at gaining the ball shooting but Birmingham just managed to win.

The sun was out on the Sunday morning to support the B Team in their quarter final against Loughborough. It was a strong performance from Hallam’s men and the best they played all weekend. Although Loughborough won 2-1, Hallam managed to win against Cardiff later in the day 6-1 placing them 6th in the B Teams category which was an improvement on their result last year.

Hallam also entered a duo in to the duo match and they did extremely well having never have been in a duo together before.

All in all, it was a great weekend for Hallam gaining more experience in Canoe Polo and Esther Freeman, the polo captain said ‘ I’m so proud of everyone and a massive well done to all of the players and spectators. I am genuinely so proud of the progress everyone has made since the start of the year.’

A crowd of 7731 packed into the Motorpoint Arena on Wednesday night to witness Sheffield Hallam win the Ice Hockey Varsity 2-1. The crowd was a record not only for Sheffield Varsity, but it is also the highest attendance at a Varsity Ice Hockey game outside of North America. This is fantastic record which both Sheffield Hallam and University of Sheffield should be proud of, and it created an amazing atmosphere in the arena.
This year was the 10th year that an Ice Hockey 1′s Varsity has taken place and Sheffield Hallam have now been victorious in every single one, winning last year’s game 3-0. The Ice Hockey 2′s Varsity took place last Thursday at iceSheffield with Hallam and University of Sheffield playing out a 0-0 draw though it was a very exciting game and a perfect teaser for last night’s main event.
It was a bitter-sweet affair for Hallam with it already confirmed that University of Sheffield had won Varsity overall. However, thousands still turned up to cheer the team on and they were rewarded early on as Hallam took the lead. James Woodcock, assisted by Johnjo Williamson, managed to squeeze the puck in past University of Sheffield’s goaltender to put Hallam 1-0 up within the first three minutes of the game.
This set the tone for the rest of the period and for most of it, Hallam were well on top and continuing to put pressure on University of Sheffield in their search for a second. However, Hallam were frustrated and the first period ended with Woodcock’s solitary goal the only thing separating the two teams.
Hallam’s second goal finally arrived in the second period. It came through Jordan Ho, who would go on to be voted as Hallam’s player of the match whilst the assists came courtesy of Williamson and George Bradbury. The goal came during a power-play after a University of Sheffield player was sent to the sin-bin and as has been the case for much of Varsity, the game was extremely competitive and both teams were sin-binned on several occasions.
Though Hallam always looked the stronger outfit, University of Sheffield weren’t giving up as they sought the icing on the cake to go with their overall Varsity win. They came close to getting a goal back in the second period, but Hallam survived the scare of a goalmouth scramble.
The second period ended with Hallam still holding their 2-0 lead but in the final period, University of Sheffield pulled a goal back to create a tense finish to the game. Ashton Bell was the player to unlock the Hallam defence with around 10 minutes to go.
University of Sheffield’s fans were celebrating once again moments later as they had the puck in the net for a second time. However, much to the relief and amusement of the Hallam faithful, the goal was ruled out for offside meaning Hallam’s 2-1 lead was preserved.
Despite Hallam having two players sin-binned at one point, and being 6-4 down on the ice, they managed to keep hold of that lead until the final whistle to secure the win and the Varsity point.
That meant that the final score for Sheffield Varsity 2015 was University of Sheffield 37–34 Sheffield Hallam. Hallam won the week 34-32 but it was a case of ‘So close, yet so far’ as they failed to win enough points to overturn the 5-0 lead University of Sheffield took into this week after Winter Varsity.
Hallam will look at a few results here and there which didn’t go their way and wonder what could have been if they had just a bit more luck. However, that’s taking nothing away from the brilliant effort by Team Sheffield Hallam over Varsity who pushed their opponents all the way and will be back next year to bring the Varsity trophy back where it belongs.

Day 5 of Sheffield Varsity 2015 saw a share of the spoils as the two points on offer were evenly divided up between Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield. This maintained University of Sheffield’s 6 point lead and moved the overall score to 19-13 ahead of a jam-packed day at the English Institute of Sport tomorrow.
The first event of the day was the Triathlon. Hallam managed to secure the point after a brilliant morning’s work from their athletes at the Southwell course.
Next up was the trampolining at University of Sheffield’s Goodwin Sports Centre. After an entertaining’s afternoon of competition, both teams were nervous and awaiting the official results. Hallam’s Katie Millington finished third in the novice category, with University of Sheffield taking the 1-2. Hallam’s Eliza Andrews then finished 2nd in the Intermediate category, sandwiched by University of Sheffield in 1st and 3rd. Hallam’s Kate Springett and Tommy Stenton finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the Inter-Advanced before Hallam secured another 1-2 in the Advanced Category thanks to Vicki Jones and Danielle Allwright. Hallam then secured 2nd in Elite through Ben Cooper and that result made the proceedings very tight. Unfortunately for Hallam, they were defeated overall as University of Sheffield claimed all six points for the Uber category, after Hallam didn’t have anybody competing. Those six points proved crucial as University of Sheffield prevailed 21-15 to give them the Varsity point and restore the six-point overall lead they had at the start of the day.
Attention now turns to the English Institute of Sport tomorrow where 13 points are on offer in volleyball, netball, basketball, badminton and table tennis. Hallam will need to take the majority of the points to set themselves up with the best chance of winning Varsity ahead of the last two days of competition.
