The winners of Performance of the Week this time are the women’s rugby union 1′s.
They win the award after winning their Northern Conference Cup final 24-18 against Edge Hill University on Wednesday afternoon. It was a good week for Team Sheffield Hallam with the men’s squash 1′s and men’s volleyball 2′s both also winning Northern Conference Cup titles, but the decision was taken to give the award to the women’s rugby union 1′s after they dug deep to grind out a deserved win after Edge Hill mounted a second-half fight back.
Hallam took a 7-0 lead with a try in the opening few minutes before Edge Hill scored an unconverted try and a penalty to take a 7-8 lead. Hallam responded brilliantly however and two more tries gave them a 19-8 lead.
Edge Hill never gave up and after they responded with two tries of their own, Hallam’s lead was reduced to just 19-18. With the game in it’s dying embers, the cup could have gone either way yet Hallam produced one final example of the impressive form they’ve shown all season to add one last try and secure a 24-18 victory.
Hallam’s cup run began with a resounding 118-0 win over Newcastle 2′s which won them Performance of the Week back in November. They were then awarded the walkover win against Sunderland before a 45-13 win away at Lancaster 1′s and a 43-24 victory over Durham saw them into the final.
It was a great win for Hallam, up against the side who had been crowned champions of the Northern 2A division, a league at the same tier of the BUCS system as the Northern 2B division, which Hallam play in and could still be crowned champions of.
The men’s squash 1′s and men’s volleyball 2′s both had convincing victories. The men’s squash 1′s defeated University of Manchester 5-0, winning all five of their individual matches. The men’s volleyball 2′s also completed the whitewash victory, defeating Manchester Metropolitan 3-0 after winning the first set 25-23, the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-20. Congratulations to both teams on their fantastic victories!!
Other notable victories took place this weekend with the Hallam Warriors, American Football team, winning 26-6 against Glasgow Tigers in the play-off to secure promotion to the Premier North division and the undefeated season.
Elsewhere, the men’s water polo 1′s team progressed to the final of the BUCS Trophy after topping the semi-final group. They were awarded a walkover win against Manchester 1′s before defeating University of Warwick 23-4 and then the University of Aberdeen 17-9. Well done to both teams for their great achievements!
