VARSITY 2014 ANNOUNCEMENT

Are you ready? Are you sure?

Well, here you go then!

Tonight, at Sheffield University Students’ Union there was a conference held by your Sports Officer Josh Saydraouten and Sheffield Uni Sports Officer Emily Dibble who announced a preliminary fixture list and logo for this academic year’s event.

For those of you not familiar with Varsity, it is an annual sporting competition between Sheffield Hallam and Sheffield University over dozens of different sports to see who can accumulate the most points and lift the Varsity trophy!

Last year, it was Sheffield University who claimed bragging rights in the Steel City with a very tight win of 36.5-34.5 points.

It is thought that this year, there will once again be 70 points up for grabs!

A preliminary fixture list has been released and there are a few surprises in there:

  • Winter Varsity will take place in a joint skiing trip between the two Universities – this will take place on the 8th January. Sports taking part will include ski and snowboarding.
  • Boxing is now a Saturday fixture, which means it’s going to be bigger and better than last year’s event!
  • Thursday 20th March will be the official opening ceremony, where the Varsity Oath will be recited and there will be numerous events between the two universities societies’ and the football will take centre stage at Hillsborough.
  • With football now opening the event, it is Ice Hockey that will be the closing fixture at the Motorpoint Arena on Wednesday 2nd April!

We will be releasing more details in the coming months but we hope that this is enough to get you all excited!

The official #hashtag for Hallam is once again #HallamVarsity and it is never too early to show your support for Team Sheffield Hallam!

Also, follow @SheffVarsity on Twitter which is a new account set up by both universities in order to keep you all up to date with who is in the lead and any changes to fixtures.

And as ever, keep your eyes peeled on us here at SHUlife Sport for more details!
